Dissonance
The series of tonal paintings in this exhibition is based on reference photographs captured by an iPhone with intentional camera movement. Denied of its inherent obligation to produce clear and high-contrast images, the costly digital technology becomes a mere tool employed for evoking the fluidity of time and memory within static paintings.
When the night falls, the darkness of New Orleans urban landscape has no feel for a lone female flâneur. Disconcerting shadows obscure the obvious structures, and humid streetlights blur and vibrate all contours. Yet ordinary pavements turn into luminescent rivers, and the dreamlike atmosphere of diffused neon and traffic signals does its best to disguise the angst. As the artificial gaze shifts elsewhere, the weight of dissonance dissolves not a moment too soon.
